Curbell Achieves Zero Landfill

Curbell Plastics has taken an aggressive approach to sustainability and is addressing the issues of waste, consumption and disposal on all fronts. Environmental sustainability programs started taking shape in 2006 in an effort to reduce operational waste and consumption through various activities and programs such as recycling, educating employees, adopting effective management systems, installing energy efficient equipment and the implementation of lean manufacturing practices.

Recognizing that the irresponsible disposal of plastic is a major contributor to pollution,

Curbell further enhanced the programs by installing energy-efficient equipment and partnering with service contractors, customers and suppliers on recycling and sustainability efforts.

Recycling at all locations, Curbell easily passed the 100- ton mark in mid-2009 and has achieved “Zero Landfill” status at the Corporate Headquarters and Western New York Plastics Facility. This means no waste from these facilities ends up in a landfill. Curbell has also significantly reduced operational expenses, inspiring greater interest and support for other sustainability efforts. Striving for balance between meeting the needs of today while protecting their natural capital for long-term prosperity, Curbell embraced the “Three R” philosophy (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and recognizes that it is the journey, not the destination that is important. Curbell continues to search for ways to improve and has engaged business partners, utility companies and local governments in sharing ideas and strategies in the quest for business sustainability.
