Nylon & Acetal Shapes

Flame-Resistant, Lightweight Extruded Nylon

Röchling Engineering Plastics recently added Sustamid® 6 FR, a lightweight, flameresistant extruded polyamide 6 nylon, to their North American product line-up. Sustamid 6 FR sheets and rods have a very high LOI (Limiting Oxygen Index) of 40% and are halogen-free. This high-strength, rigid nylon is best used in applications with high demands for both flame and wear resistance like cable clamps and wear guides for the aerospace, rail car, shipbuilding and mining industries. The new material meets specifications for rail and aerospace, including but not limited to, NFPA130 and the new European Rail Vehicle Standard DIN EN 45545-2:2013.

This newly developed material facilitates production of large-sized machined components and component parts in small piece numbers. Machined parts made of flame-retardant polyamide 6 could previously only be manufactured by injection moulding due to technical limitations. This meant that large dimensions and small piece numbers could not be economically produced due to the high tool costs.

Sustamid 6 FR is just the latest innovative product added the full line-up of the Röchling Acetal and nylon material offering that includes Sustarin® C (Acetal copolymer), Sustarin® H (Acetal homopolymer/Delrin®), Sustarin® H AF and AF DE588 (Acetal homopolymer AF blends), Sustamid® 6G (cast nylon) and Sustamid® 66 (extruded nylon). Röchling high-performance acetal and nylon products have excellent mechanical and electrical properties with the ability to maintain their physical integrity under thermal and electrical stressors at elevated temperatures.

Nylon Profiles

Petro Extrusion Technologies, Inc. (PET), extrudes custom and stock nylon shapes, in FDA, heat-stabilized and MDS filled grades of Nylon 6 and Nylon 12. Semi-rigid or flexible grades are available for most custom shapes. Profiles can be made in natural, standard or custom colors as required. Petro also offers custom cut to length capabilities.

MDS modified Nyla-Glide GR profiles are best suited to protect conveyor rails, beds and products from sliding surface friction. They are also excellent as striker plates and liners, these profiles require no lubrication to lessen friction.

PET can also custom extrude profiles based on customer drawings.

Acetal Rod & Sheet

In addition to their extensive nylon products, Nylatech, Inc. also manufactures premium acetal rod and sheet (copolymer). Nylatech Acetal offers high strength and a resistance to impact and fatigue with a low coefficient of friction and good wear properties especially in wet environments.

Their full line manufacturing capabilities allow for the production of all your stock shape needs as well as semifinished and finished custom cast components for increased savings and quick turnarounds.

Nylatech advantages include: custom orders manufactured in one week or less; same day shipping for in-stock items and short pours and flexible manufacturing for unique non-stock requirements. Nylatech acetal offers low moisture absorption, high strength and stiffness, easy machining capabilities and is FDA & NSF compliant.

The material comes in natural and black in rod ." dia. to 6" dia. from stock and plate ." through 2" in 4 x 10' and 2." through 4" in 2 x 4'. Custom sizes are available to improve part yield and reduce material cost.

Nylatech are specialists in manufacturing cast nylon 6 and 6/12 as rod, sheet and tubular bar as well as finished or semi-finished custom cast components. Available in a variety of grades including Nylatech® Oil, PVM, SL and Nythane™, these materials offer a range of properties from self-lubricating with a low coefficient of friction to increased impact resistance.

High Tensile Strength, Creep & Fatigue Resistance

Ensinger’s Delrin® stock shapes are manufactured from DuPont Delrin resin. They possess high tensile strength, creep and fatigue resistance, and excellent toughness. Engineers consistently specify DuPont Delrin stock shapes made by Ensinger because of their increased physical properties, which can be as much as 20% higher than other acetals. Ensinger uses a proprietary extrusion process that produces shapes with lower stress and better dimensional stability that leads to consistent and reliable mechanical parts. Delrin stock shapes exhibit low moisture adsorption and are chemically resistant to hydrocarbons, solvents, and neutral chemicals.

While these properties are impressive, it is the material’s significantly better fatigue endurance that makes Ensinger Delrin much more ideal for most industrial applications than its acetal copolymer counterparts. It is a popular choice for manufactured plastic gears. As automotive engineers look to reduce weight, improve energy efficiency and fuel economy, as well as lower noise output, Delrin has become increasingly popular. Its higher strength characteristics and better fatigue endurance make it an excellent choice to replace metal gears while maintaining or improving long term performance. Other popular applications include auto safety system components; conveyor parts, such as bushings and bearing housings; fasteners and clips; fuel system components; and home appliance parts.

24" Acetal Rods

GEHR GmbH from Mannheim/Germany is the first to successfully extrude acetal (POM-C) rods with a diameter of 24” (600 mm). This outperforms the current maximum available diameter of 500 mm. The rod is available from stock in natural color in 39” (1.0 m) lengths or can be cut to size to meet your requirement.

Founded in 1932, and still owned by the Gehr family, GEHR GmbH has a workforce of 250 and is one of the world's leading manufacturers of thermoplastic semifinished products. The company extrudes a variety of products: thermoplastic pipes, rods, profiles and plates. The range of materials extends from standard plastics such as PVC, PP, PE, PE-UHMW, PMMA, to industrial plastics such as POM, PA, PET, and high-performance plastics like PVDF, PPS, and PEEK.

Tubular Bars

Plastifab Industries offers one of the widest ranges of extruded extra large tubular bars in standard materials such as HDPE, polypropylene, LDPE, PPS, nylon, acetal and Delrin® AF. Current size offerings range from a combinations of 22” outside diameter to 1.75” inside diameter.

Combining longer length availability than other traditional engineering thermoplastics processes, these tubular bars reduce machining costs and provide greater flexibility in many applications.
